Ninety percent of schools in Haiti are private. They can't rely on support from the government and too often parents can't afford school fees. Teachers go unpaid for months, classrooms lack even basic supplies, and building are dreadfully inadequate.
This video documents a local Haitian solution to this pressing problem. On the remote island of La Gonave, several communities have come together and through the creation of social businesses have made their schools sustainable. Parents, teachers, school officials and students all work together to manage the businesses and assure that their schools can thrive.
